Monday 7 March 2016

Position: PhD Student
Start date: ASAP
Contract: permanent contract with Digigram
Location: Grenoble, Rhône-Alpes, France
Hosting Institutions:
- Université Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble Institute of Technology, LIG lab
- Digigram
Research themes: networking, coding, live multimedia, reliable transport
Scientific advisor: Franck Rousseau
Application deadline: 01/07/2016

Research

This research focuses on reliable transport of live multimedia flows, mainly audio and video. You will work on characterizing different types of networks, and propose original solutions to provide high quality of service on top of these networks when using several paths simultaneously. The two main goals to achieve are low latency, since we focus on live communications, and high quality of service, to provide the best experience to the user.

Many new services are provided over the top, which means that no specific lower layers services are provided by the network operators to build upon. Your goal will be to study, propose and implement a new transport protocol to reach the goal of high quality live multimedia communications using conventional Internet access. You will conduct research to study three different topics: (i) multi-path transport, (ii) reliable transport, using various strategies like retransmission, interleaving, coding, and (iii) dynamic adaptation. We expect thorough study with analytical and experimental approaches, with effective simulation and implementation results.

High quality prototype implementation is of prime importance and is an expected outcome of your work. You will interact with engineers developing professional hardware and software products for multimedia data transmission. They will provide all the necessary support to conduct real world experimentations to validate your results with practical use cases.

Location and Institution

This position is a joint position with Digigram and Grenoble INP - LIG laboratory. Digigram and LIG are only a few kilometers from one another with a direct bus line between the two.

Created in 1985, Digigram is a leading company in providing solutions for audio and video broadcasting. Based in Montbonnot, in the Inovallee technological park near Grenoble, Digigram provides a dynamic and innovative environment in developing products at the edge of latest available technologies in very high quality audio and video over IP.

The LIG laboratory is located in Grenoble, the capital of the Alps. Grenoble is one of France’s major scientific and industrial centers for computer science and applied mathematics. The city lies amidst three mountain ranges and offers exceptional quality of life, with extensive public transportation and dedicated bikeways.

Grenoble INP, the Grenoble Institute of Technology, is one of Europe’s leading technology universities, at the heart of innovation for more than a century. Grenoble Institute of Technology is involved in major development projects such as Minatec, or the Minalogic (micro and nanotechnology and embedded software) and TEneRRDIS (renewable energy) industrial clusters. With its solid combination of teaching, research and business promotion, Grenoble Institute of Technology plays a key role in making Grenoble one of the most attractive scientific and industrial locations worldwide.

Research is one of Grenoble Institute of Technology’s strengths. The LIG laboratory is one of Grenoble INP 38 laboratories, some of which are shared with the CNRS (French national scientific research centre) and the other three Grenoble universities. The scientific project of the LIG laboratory is ambient and sustainable IT. The activities of the LIG cover five key scientific domains: (i) Software Engineering and Information Systems, (ii) Formal Methods, Models and Languages, (iii) Interactive and Cognitive Systems, (iv) Distributed Systems, Parallel Computing and Networks, (v) Large Scale Data and Knowledge Processing.

The Drakkar group investigates various aspects of network protocols, security and multimedia applications with the emphasis on wireless networks, sensors networks. The LIG lab will move to the brand new PILSI IMAG building Q2 2016, thus offering very high standard work environment.
