Apple ARTS award

This award, given by Apple, recognizes the talent of European researchers across all fields.

Wireless Neighborhood Dissemination Seeking Data for Share

The latest mobile devices — of which the iPhone and iPod Touch are the most accomplished examples — pack several kinds of wireless link, spatial positioning, and the ability to capture and handle rich multimedia content into an extremely compact form. In parallel, research has produced a great many new approaches to wireless network communication. We propose to run experiments that test whether such approaches are feasible and useful in two concrete scenarios, and in time to offer a platform for studying new uses and potential applications built on these advances — for users, application designers and network operators alike.

The project’s main goal is to develop accessible, consumer-facing applications that validate some of the advanced concepts developed in the Drakkar team over recent years. Our past work has consistently anticipated the capabilities of future devices and their widespread adoption. We are now entering that era of “ubiquitous, hyper-connected” devices, which lets us run the first real-world experiments around the research we are doing.

The resulting platform will be folded into the Marvelig project before long, so that other teams in the laboratory can use it and benefit from the expertise gained. The ultimate aim is to distribute applications to volunteers willing to take part in open experiments during specific events.
